As a hockey romance writer, I spend waaaay too much time imagining what it’s like to fall in love with professional athletes. My dream is to read a hockey romance written by a woman who was an actual WAG—wife or girlfriend—of an NHL player.
The closest I’ve gotten to my dream is reading Intercepted. Intercepted is a football romance written by Alexa Martin. As a former NFL WAG, Martin has been taking notes and now she’s ready to dish. The woman can write and she’s got a great sense of humour. #MyNewBFF
I must confess that I don’t even like football. I’m strictly hockey with a side of soccer. But you don’t need a more than a passing knowledge of football to enjoy this book. #SeeWhatIDidThere
There’s a lot to like about our heroine, Marlee Harper:
her quick wit & a hilarious inner monologue
she doesn’t take any crap
she goes to games in a customized jersey bedazzled with crystals #JustLikeFrankie
Marlee’s verbal sparring with the team’s queen bee, Courtney, is bitch-ilarious. You see, Marlee is low in the WAG hierarchy because she’s only a girlfriend whose man is in the “one comma club”—guys who make less than a million. These little details are what give Intercepted authenticity. #KeepingItReal
Almost immediately, Marlee’s high life comes crashing down after a humiliating breakup. But this breakup triggers the attentions of Denver’s hottest new quarterback: Gavin Pope. They once had a fling and he certainly hasn’t forgotten her. #CarryingATorch&ANecklace
The manic narration and a fast-moving plot help to mask the book’s only weakness: the one-dimensionality of secondary characters. The villains in the book are many and #OTT. Poor Marlee gets into multiple predicaments but Gavin the QB rides in to save her each time. #KnightInShiningSpandex
Overall, it’s a fun and absorbing read that I highly recommend. And what’s with all the hashtags? It’s something I copied from Marlee, whose hashtag skills exceed mine by far. Find out for yourself when you read Intercepted.
